Bangkok is a city known for its vibrant street life, magnificent temples and bustling markets. Like any major capital, these are the activities tourists typically flock to.
And I can’t blame them! When I visited Bangkok in 2024, it was my first time setting foot in Asia, and I was ready to experience everything the city had to offer.
The great news is that Bangkok has a lot of hidden gems to offer in addition to the typical activities.
I absolutely advocate for anyone visiting Bangkok to check out the typical spots like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. If you only have a short amount of time, I wrote a guide to one day in Bangkok.
If you’re looking to explore Bangkok beyond the usual tourist spots, here are eight off-the-beaten-path attractions that should be on your list.
Wat Sam Phran (Dragon Temple)
Nestled about 40 kilometers west of central Bangkok, Wat Sam Phran, also known as the Dragon Temple, is a surreal and awe-inspiring sight. You’ll need a taxi to get there, but it’ll be worth it.
This 17-story pink cylindrical tower is encircled by a gigantic dragon, whose body spirals all the way to the top. Visitors can walk through the dragon’s body via a staircase inside, leading to the rooftop where stunning views await.
The temple is not just visually striking but also offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. They even sell food outside!
You would think this wouldn’t be a Bangkok hidden gem, but so many people don’t know about it.
Wat Phra Dhammakaya
Located in the Pathum Thani province, about 50 kilometers north of Bangkok, Wat Phra Dhammakaya is a sprawling and modern Buddhist temple that stands in stark contrast to the city’s ancient temples.
The temple is famous for its enormous golden stupa, which resembles a UFO and can accommodate over a million people.
Wat Phra Dhammakaya is not just a place of worship but also a center for meditation and spiritual retreats, attracting thousands of followers.
The sheer scale and futuristic design of this temple make it a must-visit for those interested in contemporary religious architecture.
The Airplane Graveyard
For an experience unlike any other, head to the Airplane Graveyard in the Ramkhamhaeng area. This eerie yet fascinating spot is home to the remains of several abandoned airplanes, including a disused Boeing 747.
Until I heard about this graveyard, I hadn’t thought too hard about what happens to planes after they’re “gone”.
The site is owned by a local family, who lives among the wreckage and charges a small fee for entry. Visitors can explore the interiors of the planes, making it a playground for photographers and urban explorers alike.
It’s got almost a post-apocalyptic feel.
The Amulet Market
Tucked away near Wat Mahathat, the Amulet Market is a treasure trove of Thai culture and spirituality. This bustling market specializes in amulets, charms and talismans believed to bring luck, protection, and good fortune.
Stalls are packed with intricate carvings, small statues of Buddha and various religious artifacts. The market is frequented by locals and monks seeking spiritual items. It offers a unique insight into Thailand’s religious practices.
Even if you’re not in the market for an amulet, the experience of wandering through this lively and spiritual marketplace is unforgettable.
It’s easy to squeeze in pretty quickly while you’re visiting temples.
Pak Khlong Talad (Flower Market)
Open 24 hours a day, Pak Khlong Talad is Bangkok’s largest wholesale flower market.
Located near the Chao Phraya River, the market is a bustling hub where vendors sell an array of flowers, from roses and orchids to marigolds and lotus blossoms.
Visiting in the early morning or late at night offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the vendors as they prepare stunning floral arrangements for temples, weddings, and events. This market is not just about flowers—it’s a vibrant slice of local life.
Plus, who doesn’t love flowers?
Artist’s House (Baan Silapin)
Hidden along the quiet canals of Thonburi, the Artist’s House, or Baan Silapin, is a charming art gallery and cultural space housed in a 200-year-old wooden building.
The house features traditional Thai puppetry performances, art exhibitions and a café overlooking the canal.
The setting is peaceful and offers a glimpse into Bangkok’s old-world charm, far removed from the chaotic streets of the city center. This Bangkok hidden gem is perfect for those who appreciate art, culture and a slower pace of life.
Erawan Museum
Located in Samut Prakan, just south of Bangkok, the Erawan Museum is one of the city’s most visually stunning hidden gems.
The museum is housed inside a massive, three-headed elephant statue, which stands 43 meters tall. The museum’s three levels represent the underworld, earth, and heaven, with each floor filled with intricate artwork, religious artifacts, and stunning stained glass ceilings.
Also, the lush gardens surrounding the museum add to its mystical atmosphere, making it a perfect retreat from the city’s chaos.
Phraeng Phuthon
For a taste of old Bangkok, head to Phraeng Phuthon, a small and lesser-known neighborhood nestled between the Grand Palace and the Giant Swing.
This area is one of Bangkok’s last remaining quarters with well-preserved Sino-Portuguese shophouses, offering a glimpse into the city’s colonial past. Phraeng Phuthon is also home to some of Bangkok’s best street food.
The quiet streets, lined with charming old buildings and vintage shops, make this neighborhood a delightful place to wander and soak in the city’s history.
